The London Borough of Merton is a borough in south-west London. The borough was formed in 1965 by merging together the Municipal Boroughs of Mitcham and Wimbledon, and the Merton and Morden Urban District, all formerly within Surrey.

The names Mitcham, Merton and Morden are all Anglo-Saxon in origin. The name Merton dates from the 10th Century, and means ‘farmstead by the pool’. The area changed hands again in 1066 when knights under the Duke of Normandy crossed the English Channel and defeated King Harold II at Hastings.

Merton Park is a very safe place to live. The Met police currently rate the area as having average crime. Both the 2014/2015 crime and violence against the person rates in this ward were significantly lower than the London rates.

Towards the end of his life Horatio Nelson, the victor of Trafalgar, lived at Merton Place, an elegant country house set in 160 acres of landscaped grounds in what is now the London Borough of Merton in South London in an area more commonly known as South Wimbledon, where I live.
