Blue crab is a staple food for Redfish and Black Drum. If you have ever accidentally hooked one of these fish deep in the throat, you may have heard a grinding and crunching sound as these are the pharyngeal teeth, or “crushers,” in the back of the fish’s mouth crushing down on your hook.

- Remove the claws.
- Pinch the tips of the crab shell off.
- Hook them through one of their fin or leg holes.
- You can also hook them through the corner of their shell.
- Use a 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook.
- Make sure to leave the hook point exposed to get a good hook set.
Can you knuckle blue crab?
In order to keep the crab knuckle from sliding down the hook and potentially covering up your hook point, tip the bait with a small piece of Fishbites. Note: When using live blue crabs for bait, you can put them on ice which will essentially put them to sleep so when you prepare the crab knuckles, it’s done humanely.
