Our history The first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Australia was formed in Victoria in 1871. Since then, RSPCA Member Societies have been established in every State and Territory, culminating in the formation of a national body, RSPCA Australia, in 1980.

The welfare of all farmed animals is protected by the Animal Welfare Act 2006 which makes it an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to any animal. The Act also contains a duty of care to animals – anyone responsible for an animal must take reasonable steps to make sure the animal’s welfare needs are met.

Throughout 2020, despite the obstacles, we successfully rehomed 612 dogs, 1,812 cats, 336 rabbits and 271 horses through our national centres. That’s a very happy Christmas for over 3,000 rescue animals!
